Patients with symptoms of breast hypertrophy or enormous breasts, referred to as gigantomastia, have similar sequelae.
There are multiple procedures that can be performed through the years, which will reduce the breasts. Dr. Linder favors the inferior pedicle technique (Wise-Pattern). This technique has allowed us to preform enormous reductions without loss of the nipple areolar complex and maintain excellent blood supply to the nipple areola.
Hematoma is a one to two percent incident status post all major surgeries under general anesthesia. Drainage tubes are placed postoperatively for a minimum of 24 hours in our practice which may help to evacuate the fluid. However, drains have not been found to prevent hematomas.
Breast reduction revision is a very tricky operation because blood supply has already been violated once to the nipple areolar complex and therefore the Board Certified Plastic Surgeon must be very diligent and experienced with this technique. It is absolutely vital that the nipple areolar complex maintains its blood supply and that the base pedicle is not dissected. Revision can occur for a symmetric breast as well.
Breast reduction surgeries are functional operations. Patients present with horrendous symptoms of massive amounts of back pain, neck strain, grooving of shoulder blades, rashes and so forth. All insurance companies have different policies and plans. PPO plans often will cover breast reduction surgeries if the patient is going to be having a certain amount of tissue removed per breast and the symptoms have been documented.
